John Copeland's work is based on exaggerated and expressive representations of everyday or domestic scenes. One of Copeland's main characteristics is the balance between abstraction and figuration, which at the same time corresponds to the perceptual relationship between reality and subjectivity.
Both the main images and the titles of his works are from references to songs, photographs, magazine articles, images and objects that for different reasons attract the artist's attention and are linked together during his creative process. Conceptually, ideas such as metanarrative, the idea of the absurd, as well as impermanence are present in Copeland's work, achieving a pictorial realism of disordered and simultaneous subjectivity on several levels.
John Copeland has had solo exhibitions at venues including Eighteen Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark (2022); Huxley-Parlour, London, UK (2021); V1 Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark (2020); and Newport Street Gallery, London, UK (2018). She has participated in group exhibitions at venues including Halsey McKay Gallery, New York, USA (2021); V1 Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark (2021); and Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Denmark (2012). In 2007 he commissioned for the Love Art Party Artist Collaboration for the Whitney Museum, New York, USA.
