Riccardo Gusmaroli was born in Verona in 1963. As a young man he moved to Milan, where he worked as a photographer of architecture and still life. In 1992 he began his collaboration with the Galleria Toselli in Milan. His first photography artwork comes natural, but over the years his research evolves until he reproduces and transforms film with marks and thin scratches, colourful traits that elevate the work of two-dimensional real sculptures. During testing, materials were becoming more varied, from stamps to maps of the "whole city", enriched by waves and edges, minimal but essential, creating out of nothing "imaginary journeys with impossible routes." His whirlpool, consisting of paper boats that were drawn on canvas were with circular routes and concentric spirals that evoke the slight movement of a ship that sails at sea. The underlying theme of Riccardo Gusmaroli’s artwork is lightweight and fundamental in the study of solids and voids, points of light and shadow.

He has exhibited in major group exhibitions both public and private spaces in Italy and overseas: Viafarini in Milan, where he exhibited with De Maria Accardi as well as at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Arezzo, the Gallery of Modern Art in Turin, Barcelona, Brussels, New York and at the art gallery in Sperone.
