Nurul Asikin Binti Roslan won the 2019 Most Promising Artist of the Year Emerging Artist (Malaysia) award for her artwork titled, ‘Bunga Moyang’ (Flower of the Spirits). Inspired by the Mah Meri culture, an ethnic group native to the western part of Peninsular Malaysia, the artist shines a light on the culture and customs of Malaysia’s indigenous people (Orang Asli). As a symbol of respect for their elders, the Mah Meri traditionally adorn the leaves at family gatherings like as weddings and funerals.
Asikin's artworks are mostly culturally focused, which serves as an inspiration for her.
