Ashley Bickerton’s wild, ever-evolving multimedia practice has ranged from geometric abstraction to figurative painting. Bickerton rose to prominence in the 1980s as a member of New York’s vibrant East Village art scene, where he reacted against the dominant Neo-Expressionism of Julian Schnabel and David Salle. Instead, he pioneered the Neo-Geo movement, using an abstract geometric style to critique the mechanization and commercialization of contemporary society. Following a move to Bali, Bickerton embraced a more figurative style that incorporated threads of hyperrealism, exoticism, and sexuality. The artist has exhibited in cities around the world. He has participated in the Venice Biennale, the Biennale of Sydney, and the Whitney Biennial. Bickerton’s work has sold for six figures at auction and belongs in the collections of The Broad, the Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum, the Tate, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
