It’s time to get to grips with the main Art Fairs of this year. Indeed, it will be our singular aim to delve inside the most important developments of the art system, of which fairs are fundamental. This week we have chosen the 8th Edition of Art Genève, which will be held from 31st January to 3rd February 2019 at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco.

Directed by Thomas Hug, this year the fair wants to offer a wide overview of the most interesting international galleries and promote a dynamic dialogue between institutions, galleries, private collections, as well as independent spaces and curators. Art Genève will welcome 90 contemporary and modern art galleries from 18 countries presenting more than 800 artists in Palexpo’s. 

Switzerland is one of the most important European countries in the contemporary art field, as every year this "fiscal Island" hosts several, consecutive fairs with important exhibitions. In a key moment for luxury tourism in the beautiful city of Geneva, the fair welcomes all visitors in a relaxed and friendly setting. Open to a wide audience, Art Genève appeals directly to collectors and professionals, which can thus be strengthening for many international exchanges and meetings. The visitors are expected to be comprised of about 400 collectors, museum professionals, international art schools, galleries and Swiss institutions that are actively working in the field of art. 

In seven years of continuous development and consolidation, Art Genève has promoted much high quality contemporary and modern art through different exhibitions in the Geneva Lake region. For its eighth edition, Art Genève extends its artistic proposal, hosting for the second time the Pavilion of Arts and Design, and to increase the offer to the visitors of decorative arts, historical and contemporary design.

Highlights of this year...

The 2019 edition will celebrate the 5th anniversary of "The Estate Show", an annual exhibition presenting monumental works by historical artists, with Chris Burden’s 40 Foot Stepped Skyscraper.

The Kunsthaus Baselland, the Ringier Collection from Zurich with a focus on Valentin Carron, the personal collection of artist Olivier Mosset presented by the Musée de La Chaux-de-Fonds and the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art displaying a timeless exhibition will join the MAMCO and its "in course of acquisition" stand, the Centre d’Art Contemporain presenting the "Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement" and other independent regional and international art spaces to enrich artgenève’s institutional landscape. The Fondation Beyeler, the Whitechapel Gallery and the Serpentine Galleries from London will also honor the Salon d’Art with their presence.  

We are also ready to lead you behind scenes of Arte Fiera in Bologna under the new artistic direction of Simone Menegoi, follow our art market area!

A selection of works from Jean Pigozzi’s Contemporary African Art Collection form an exhibition titled "Studio Africa", the presentation of a large hanging work by Kimsooja presented by the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon at the entrance of the fair as well as the installation of a superb neon by Cerith Wyn Evans at the centre of the Salon will complete the panorama of non-commercial exhibitions. The exhibition "Turbulent Horizon" will offer a focus on Video Art, presenting a wide horizon line of screens visible from a helicopter.

Artgenève/ will be present at the fair with performances by Hannah Weinberger and Hsia-Fei Chang staging an impressive sculptural wall of speakers. A next performative and musical act is scheduled to take place during the Venice Biennale in a baroque Venetian theatre, with the participation of Anri Sala and Angela Bulloch amongst others. artgenève/sculptures will also innovate creating for the first time a musiqueparcours in Geneva’s historic centre and bringing together about 10 sculptures.

The watchmaker F.P.Journe will award the Prix Solo artgenève - F.P.Journe to one of the 17 monographic exhibitions presented at the fair with a jury composed of key figures from the international art scene: Hans-Ulrich Obrist (Serpentine Galleries), Beatrix Ruff (Ringier Collection), Andrea Bellini (Centre d’art contemporain Genève) and Ines Goldbach (Kunsthaus Baselland). Art talks, a programme of conferences offered this year with the support of Christie’s, will welcome other important personalities from the art world.

Finally, the exhibition "Get a Nerve (La Nostra)" will take place for the first time in parallel of artgenève at the Villa Sarasin, neighbor to Palexpo’s exhibition halls, offering (as its title in anagram indicates) a playful, turbulent and straightforward programme of exhibitions.
