Roberto Kusterle (1948, Gorizia, Italy) is a self-taught photographer and artist. He has been active in the field of visual art since the 1970s, initially taking up painting and installation work. In the late 1980s, he became interested in photography, which soon became the main medium for his artistic expression. His photographs have been published in more than twenty publications, including six independent monographs, and received an award for the best photography exhibition at the Ljubljana Month of Photography festival in 2006. He lives and works in Italy.
In his work, he focuses on the themes of continuality and connectivity between the human, animal and the natural worlds. His artistic style encompasses elements of the unusual, bizarre and the surreal. Not documentary in nature, his photographs are figments of his imagination; the objects, people and the worlds depicted do not exist in reality, which typically serves as the basis for photography. Kusterle creates his scenes in the studio as well as out in the open, using an installation-based and set design approaches to manufacture his reality. Framed into desired shots, he later manipulates them in the darkroom or on the computer in the final stage of photography enlargement.
