Rick Stevens is an American artist born in Sparta, Michigan and currently lives and works in New Mexico, USA. He studied at Grand Rapids College, Michigan (1977-79), Kendall School of Design (1979-81) and Aquinas College, Michigan (1982).
Rick Stevens' painting-based practice combines an interest in nature and science. He has a mystical approach to abstraction that moves beyond the constraints of direct representation, to produce revelatory expressions of his own experiences within the natural world, evident in his large-scale and smaller-scale figurative and abstract paintings.
Working from his studio in Santa-Fe and en-plein-air, he creates his paintings using oil paints and other mediums for texture, including burlap, gold leaf and sand. Vivid and textured tones populate his canvases with his well-known vocabularly of shapes and brush strokes. He mainly paints on canvas and occasionallly directly onto panel, with his works float mounted in bespoke high quality walnut frames.
Rick Stevens has a growing audience of collectors across the United States, United Kingdom and worldwide and shows his work in both solo and group exhibitions on a regular basis.
