Unique work by Nicola De Marsico from the series "Uccelli in Gabbia (Birds in Cages)", made with resin and plaster on canvas.

The series was created in 2020. The intention is that of a detachment from past production, both in terms of materials and techniques used and the result obtained. The concept of giving a pictorial surface such as the canvas, historically two-dimensional, a turn toward three-dimensionality is the basis for the birth of the work. The title is a reference to the visual effect the work suggests with the figure of anthropomorphic faces attempting to emerge beyond the canvas; but it is also a metaphor for the condition of modern man, who is trapped within social, cultural and economic conventions.

The impossibility of knowing who lurks beyond the mask poses an indirect question to the viewer who stands before it, namely: in what way do we know the other; what is our capacity for understanding in the face of the mask? The mask as a symbol of immutability, but also of metamorphosis. The visual effect achieved through a dynamic process such as "casting" makes the vision dynamic and not static , with the movement suggested by the lines and color merging together in the material. Light, installed inside some of the masks through a remote LED system, emerges forcefully from the slits in the figure's eyes, thus bringing the experience of the work to a level of "augmented reality," charging the viewer with a mysterious force of attraction.

1996 Salerno, Italy

Nicola De Marsico was born in Salerno on June 25, 1996. He is a self-taught artist who began creating his first artworks around the age of 17. The artist's first series of works, "DEMA: a journey through time and space" (2015-//), is a series of abstract paintings with a strong scientific focus. With the series "New World Disorder" (2016-18) the artist began to approach figurative painting.

"Distorted Portraits" (2016-18). Some paintings from this series were presented abroad during the course of international group exhibitions of Contemporary Art. "EDEN: the garden of Earthly delights" (2017-2019), is the fouth artwork series created by the artist, the female figures portrayed in this painting are set in abstract and timeless spaces, taking from the forms and stories of classical mythology, to which many elements of the works refer, from the details within the paintings to their titles. The works of the "Eden" series are first presented to the public on the occasion of the artist's first solo exhibition, curated by Mattia Maisto, held in Rome in spring 2018 at Nvmen gallery.

Starting in 2019, the artist embarked on a new artistic path, opening up to the search for new materials and new media never previously used in the creation of his works. One of the objects that most arouses fascination and captures the artist's attention is the mirror, with its ability to define and distort physical reality depending on its position. From the use of mirrors and other types of reflective surfaces came the idea for the series "Mirror_verse" (2019 -//).

During 2020, the artist devoted himself to the creation of the "Birds in a cage" series in which the concepts of painting and sculpture merge their boundaries and emerge strongly from the two-dimensional surface of the canvas, transcending the limits of conventional labels.
