After the loss of Soviet subsidies in the 1990s, the Cuban government launched a number of measures aimed at revitalising the country's economy. As a result, Cuba opened up to tourism and foreign investment. Years later, Cubans were tentatively able to start creating their own self-employed jobs. In 2015, Cuba's reforms received a much-publicised endorsement from the Obama Administration, and the beginning of the thaw resulted in graffiti artists from both countries meeting, embarking on a vibrant dream of co-creation.
The walls of Cuba ceased to be the exclusive canvas for revolutionary slogans and popular noticeboards and began to be transformed into artistic displays, expressing local pride through the combined sensibilities of artists from both worlds and giving rise to unique imagery.
The international economic crisis and Trump's rise to power slashed that spark before it could unfold to its full potential, and the disillusionment that followed generated an artistic exodus unprecedented in the revolutionary era. Those who stayed behind tend to the remnants of that awakening and reinterpret its legacy, in an unmistakably Cuban way. This is the story told by the walls of Havana.
