Behind the artistic name FRU GOMEZ (Mrs Gomez) we find Stockholm-based artist Zulma Gomez Thurnell (b. 1980). At the age of 4 Zulma was adopted from Cali, Colombia to Sweden. Growing up she felt different and spent much of her time singing, dancing, writing, and reading books. And despite her love for both cooking & baking as well as sports & interior design, she never quite found her way.

It wasn't until the fall of 2019, after her mother's death, that through healing, meditation and deep introspection, Zulma began to find her way back to the creative power she always had within.

By 2021, Zulma begins to develop her healing abilities and perform sessions on family and friends. In the autumn the same year, she begins writing again and after hundreds of poems and drawings, she quickly realises that it is the artist within that needs to be let out.  So, in the spring of 2022, Zulma quit her current job to seriously pursue her path of art and healing.

In the summer of 2022, she begins and completes her first two collections “The Beginnings” collection and “The Resurrection” collection, while practicing healing on the side. Later in the fall, “Popsicle” collection will be added, which will be shown in its entirety along with parts of the spring collection “Vibrations” at Zulma's solo exhibition in Stockholm, February 2023.

With her paintings, Zulma wants to highlight joy and love but also remind us that we all have the power within. As a healer, she feels the energies in society, and it is these along with her own and the canvas' energies that are conveyed in her paintings. After the painting is completed and named, Zulma charges the paintings with more extra loving energies that are meant to reach the recipients.

To date, Zulma paints mostly in acrylics but she also experiments with both spray paint, watercolours, and oil pastels. And are excited to explore more mediums in the future.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Inspired by the polarized society, I want to create a place in between, where everything fits. Where there are no rights or wrongs. Here everything is allowed, both the fine and foul the dark and the light.

In my paintings I want to demonstrate how the world might look today, as well as tomorrow and further into the future. On the naked and innocent core of the canvas I merge my energies, those of society and its own. Layers upon layers of strong, confident, and brilliant colors coexist with cloudy, withdrawn and muted, almost neglected shades. While drips, splashes and runny hues fight to emerge between glitter, metallic and almost translucent whites.

While in my 2022 “Popsicle” collection I wanted to convey how the colors within can pierce through darkness and out into light, with my 2023 “Vibrations” collection I want to bring out even more the full potential of the human soul. I want, with my art to communicate light and love because between the darkness there are layering upon layering of joy and light just longing to burst through. So do like the paintings in front of you. Take out your gold and let it shine. Strong, proud, and steady!
