Home Magazine Spread art: 5 podcasts about contemporary art

As a second wave of the coronavirus crisis surges in Europe, countries such as United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy have imposed new lockdowns and forced the closure of institutions for a month and, in some cases, potentially longer. Despite these forced closures, museum institutions and art galleries continue their artistic programs using digital technologies to keep their audience some company.

Online platforms and social networks have been the most widely used tools, suggesting new formats or enhancing existing ones. Thus, in addition to online exhibitions, virtual and direct social realities, contemporary art podcasts have also been intensified.

For this reason, we have gathered some of the best art podcasts out there. Below, you will find our top 5 favourite art podcast, from art market reports to art gossip

1. The Art Newspaper Podcast

In each episode, the Art Newspaper Podcast brings the art world's big stories, from breaking news and insider insights to exhibitions and events around the world. In every episode, the host Ben Luke is joined by special guests discussing the latest stories. You can learn about female Old Masters finally finding prominence, surreal ideas about sex or the many facets of the post-war London scene.

2. The Way I See It

Presented by British critic and journalist Alastair Sooke, The Way I See It was born from the BBC's wonderful collaboration with New York MoMA. Accompanied by the reflections of the great thinkers of the time, each episode hosts not only art experts but also musicians and actors, such as Steve Reich and Steve Martin.

3. The Great Women Artists

Created off the back of @thegreatwomenartists Instagram, this podcast is all about celebrating women artists. Presented by art historian and curator, Katy Hessel, this podcast interviews artists on their career, or curators, writers, or general art lovers, on the female artist who means the most to them.

4. David Zwirner Podcasts

A contemporary art gallery in New York, London and Hong Kong, David Zwirner currently represents over sixty artists and estates. The gallery also has its own podcast, in which they discuss a range of inspiring art-related themes. Each episode brings interviews with two exceptional makers and thinkers discussing how art shapes, elevates, and shifts our point of view—and the surprising twists and turns of the creative process.

5. Art for your ear

Art for your ear brings you stories from some of Danielle Krysa’sfavorite contemporary artists. “When I studied Art History, the best part was, well, the gossip. I loved finding out why artists did certain things, what was going on in their personal lives, and behind-the-scenes details about other artists they knew and worked with. This podcast is exactly that ... inside-scoop stories from the artsiest people I know. You'll hear first-hand from these talented, successful, full-time artists (who also happen to be regular people with hilarious stories) before they’re in the Art History books” said Danielle (aka The Jealous Curator).
