Bill Kane è un artista multimediale americano il cui lavoro interseca i confini della fotografia, della pittura e della stampa nel tentativo di esaminare l'idea di cosa sia e possa essere un'immagine.Vive e lavora in California, vicino a San Francisco.
Kane ha conseguito la laurea in Educazione presso l'Università del Massachusetts, Amherst nel 1973, e la laurea in Fotografia presso la San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA, nel 1978. Ha ricevuto due volte una National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, una per la pittura e una per la fotografia.
Dalla fine degli anni '70, Kane ha continuamente sperimentato diversi metodi e materiali come parte di una più ampia esplorazione nella definizione di creazione di immagini. La fotografia e i suoi elementi fondamentali hanno costantemente informato questo lavoro. La serie Emanations è un tentativo di esprimere il potenziale spirituale dell'aspetto più essenziale della fotografia: la luce. Ogni opera della serie iniziò la sua evoluzione come un'immagine scansionata di un thangka buddista, un dipinto spirituale di una divinità buddista, che fu poi sfocato e allungato fino a quando tutto ciò che rimaneva era un'immagine distillata di colore e forma. Queste immagini ridotte sono state poi stampate su tele, risultando in quelle che Kane chiama "rappresentazioni elementari dei corpi di luce dei Buddha".”
Il suo lavoro è incluso in numerose collezioni istituzionali, tra cui quelle del Museo d'Arte Moderna di San Francisco, del Museo de Young, del Carnegie Mellon Institute di Pittsburgh, PA, del Crocker Art Museum di Sacramento e del Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Francoforte, Germania.
Kane ha esposto le sue fotografie e opere multimediali ampiamente in più di 80 mostre in tutti gli Stati Uniti, Europa e Asia ed è rappresentato da Modernism, Inc. San Francisco, CA e Stremmel Gallery Reno, NV.
