1906 Padua, Italy

Antonio Zancanaro ( Padua, 8 April 1906 - Padua, 3 June 1985 ) was an Italian painter and engraver.

After a promising start to a sports career, he began painting as an autodidact in 1932. He trained mainly in Florence, in contact with Ottone Rosai, and in Milan, where he attended Ernesto Treccani, Renato Guttuso and other members of the anti-fascist cultural environment. He travelled a lot abroad, especially during the regime, and was always a member of the Communist Party .
His production moved above all in realism, with pictorial cycles depicting the humblest social realities of both the north and south of Italy. Particularly known was the series of Gibbo, a surreal and fiercely caricatural character inspired by Mussolini.
