Drawings & Works on Paper

Acrylic and charcoal on C-print

1975 , Portugal

Born in Évora, Portugal, 1975 The work of Manuel Caeiro relates painting to architecture and design. The Portuguese artist conceives drawing as a means for reflecting on architecture and its formal principles, suggesting three-dimensional modular structures with which he puts forward situations of tension and balance in space. The repetition of superimposed geometric shapes, the roots of which lie deep in constructivism, allows him to explore the limits between imagination and abstraction, playing with the idea of “trompe l’oeil”. A graduate from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon University, he began to exhibit individually in the late 1990s. Shortly afterwards his career took off internationally, which has enabled him to show his works in different museums and art centres in both Europe and America.
To Manuel Caeiro the representation of space is made through forms that unfold spacial rhythms and modulations and on the understanding of drawing as a vehicle of experience, action and conceptualization.  The effect of layer repetition and overlap incorporates a sculptural character through the representation of the surface. In this new series of works the artist explores the photography effect saturating and depleting color making it closer to a more abstract approach.
