Woodcut technique on wood, acrylic

1972 , Japan

Born and educated in Kanazawa, Tokyo-based artist Kenichi Yokono makes traditional woodblocks, but rather than treating them as a means for printing, he displays the carved blocks themselves. Manga, anime, and horror movie tropes populate his works, which are almost exclusively red and white, and always intricately detailed and precisely patterned. Present in each piece are images both sinister and saccharine—pandas, hammers and sickles, deadpanning children. In addition to solo shows California, Yokono has exhibited in Amsterdam, Vienna, and Tokyo, and has work in collections across America.
