"Portrait of a woman #6" by Janan Nozari - Embroidery on white stockings
Janan Nozari uses undergarments, stockings and pantyhose (a historical symbol of the liberation of women's bodies) mounted on hoops, reminiscent of embroidery looms and evoking conflicting emotions of intimate fears and erotic expectations.
The work is part of the two-person exhibition "Leili" by Darya Ershad and Janan Nozari on display at Gilda Contemporary Art from 10 February to 10 March 2021.
1983 , Iran (Islamic Republic of)
Janan Nozari was born in Iran in 1983. She lives and works between Tehran and Rasht. She graduated in painting from Sureh University in Shiraz and then specialised in Illustration at Art University in Tehran. Her adult experience in India, where she lived for several years, was fundamental. She uses painting, photography and installation indiscriminately in her work, but it is mainly in the use of embroidery and experimentation with textiles that the focus of her exploration lies. Her works are inspired by women's lives and bodies, by the female impulse to give life. Themes such as gender identity and expression and the relationship to the history of feminism are continually explored within her poetics. Although she is deeply influenced by her Iranian artistic origins, particularly the ancient Persian miniatures, she looks at the contemporary world through the lens of modern art. She has participated in several group and solo exhibitions in Iran, France, Dubai and Kuwait.
