'Cypress Point,' by James Cobb, Oil on Gesso Board Painting

This oil on gesso board painting by James Cobb features a lone cypress tree near the California coastline. The expansive angular tree has a coat of thick bright green leaves on the upper truck. The tree is outstretched and arching towards the glistening water behind it. The artist took inspiration from his travels to Southern California. Predominant colors are the blue ocean and greenery of the foreground tree. A wisp of pink at the horizon punctuates the blue sky.

James Cobb has worked out of his studio in Norman, Oklahoma for the last two decades. His work is executed in oil when painting and charcoal and conté when drawing. He attempts to paint from life and hosts a life drawing session every Friday for artists around the state. Cobb tries to stay true to the subject but is increasingly adding abstractions to his work. He paints all subject matter from still-life, to landscapes, portraiture, and figures.
