Erik Mattijssen's works are densely populated. They are compositions consisting of buckets, vases, food, cans and furniture arranged in a mysterious way. The (former) owners are not to be understood as physically present, but mentally present. The artist saw many of the objects for the first time on his numerous travels, such as at a market in Calcutta or in a grocery shop in Paris.
