1971 Lecce, Italy

Maglie (Le), 1971

After graduating in Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera, Papuli settled in Milan, where he currently lives and works. After the first sculptural experiments in stone, wood and plaster in 1991, in 1993, he attended an international workshop in Berlin on paper making methods that led him, in 1995, to make it his chosen material, assembling, digging and thinning sheets. virgins, printed pages of old books, telephone directories and typographical scraps. In his hands, the paper is transformed from impregnable cellulose mixed with earths, herbs and colors to stratified material, carefully selected by color and weight, cut by hand and molded into strips, of which the artist exploits the structural potentials as ductile sculptural material and malleable to extrapolate the layered architecture of its "lamellar volumes". The surface of its paper structures with forms of organic inspiration (Auree, Tursi, Intondi and Cartangoli) is animated by an optical-kinetic dynamism, created by the changing chromatic shades of light that insinuates itself in the facets of the paper layers. In its installations, dynamic modular structures, made up of thousands of strips of paper, become precious pieces for the construction of shapes that are fluidized in modular structures with a flowing and plastic structure, the Cartoframmi and the Panta Rei, such as those made for the personnel at the Foundation Calderara di Vacciago di Ameno (No), in 2010, at the Aragonese Castle of Ischia, at the Flux Laboratory in Geneva, in 2011, at the Pinacoteca Comunale of Villa Soranzo in Varallo Pombia (No), in 2012, and at the Palazzo Ducale di Martina Franca (Ta), in 2014, where he also exhibited snaking totems upwards as flexuous ribbons (Sapale). In the same year he made a cascade of strips of blue paper, The Blue Ribbon, at the House of Peroni in London. The experimentation of new materials similar to paper leads him to continuous trespassing in other fields: from the sculpture-dresses created for the fall-winter 2013-2014 collection by the Croatian designer Goran Lelas to the furnishings, from the scenographic installations for well-known fashion brands, fairs , like the Luxe Pack in Monaco, and international exhibitions, such as Paper Jewels, held at the Milan Triennale in 2009, the sets for theatrical performances, such as the one designed for the Teatro Studio of the Parco della Musica in Rome. His installations are made up of sheets of cardboard clinging to the ceiling, such as those made at the Galleria Casa Dugnani of Robecco sul Naviglio (Mi) for personal papers, fibers and installations, segments of wood intertwined and suspended to form aerial structures, such as the inlaid one at MUBA in Milan in 2012-2013, or even of fringed synthetic fiber ribbons that go to compose voluminous circular tapestries, the Pualblu, exhibited at the Flux Laboratory in Geneva in 2011; at other times, meters of frayed polyester strips descend in cascading scrolls, like those of the Mise en Mpise installation at the Hotel Boscolo in Milan in 2013 or at the Hermès showroom in Rome in 2005. Its wallpaper and filament structures of fabrics, the Fiber & Fibers, have adorned the windows of the Missoni flagship store in Milan, in 2000. In the 2000s, the artist exhibited at the Museum of Palazzo Morando in Milan, at the Mudam in Luxembourg, in Ulm, Germany, and , on the occasion of the international exhibition The New Italian Design, in Taiwan, and Beijing, in China, in Bilbao and Madrid, in Spain, at the Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda in Santiago de Chile and at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Istanbul. In 2016, he exhibited at Palazzo Loredan, in the context of the Venice Biennale, and at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, a work conceived in collaboration with the Milanese architect De Lucchi for the DoppiaFirma project. In 2012, the artist exhibited at the Pino Pascali Museum Foundation in Polignano a Mare (Ba) and was a finalist of the International Lìmen Arte Prize. He has participated in important exhibitions of contemporary art, such as CONTEXT. Art Miami, Art Karlsruhe and ART.FAIR of Cologne, Germany, the VII Triennial International du Papier at the Musée de Chameny, in Svizzedra, Artefiera Bologna and Art Verona.
