Drawings & Works on Paper

paper, folded

1967 Dresden, Germany

Antje Blumenstein's work is divided into series in which, in addition to a wide variety of materials (paper, painting, neon light, acrylic glass, steel) and techniques, various topics and questions are dealt with. These groups of works can be interrupted and continued at a later point in time so that they can mutually influence and develop over a long period of time, as in a conversation. In her current work with folded paper, reduction and a clear formal composition dominate. In addition to the light and its inevitable companion, the shadow, the main
protagonist in her work is the line, which is repeatedly examined in its relationship to
space. The artists fold the paper manually with boards of different thicknesses, both from the back and the front, so that an intense play of light and shadow is created - the flat paper becomes a relief. Every new paper work is preceded by a sample in which the artist develops the new composition. Once this has been found, it is transferred “cleanly” onto a fresh sheet of paper. Blumenstein's artworks are part of Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Kunstfonds, and numerous private collections such as Collection Grauwinkel, Berlin; Collection Schroth, Soest; Hanten-Schmidt Collection Cologne/Dresden/Vienna.
