In Bloem is Afrikaans or Dutch for Flowering.
Adéle painted this piece with sand instead of her usual coffee granules. This piece is a turning point in her work, from coffee granules that serve as the background to her heavily textured pieces.
Adéle feels this looks like Hortensias as it has the same shape and colour palette as Hortensias. Hortensias can range from snowy white to pink and purplish blue. The colour of the flowers depends on the alkaline state of the soil. She often paints in her garden and has a large Hortensia close to her summer workstation.
At the same time, this piece may be clouds, or cheesy or... and Adéle runs away with hundreds of ideas. She hates naming her works. What is a fact is that this painting is an uplifting and joyous piece, like the beginning of spring. Adéle can hardly remember what she was looking at; she was fascinated by the shapes of small detail. Which is a running theme in her work, little moments and little aspects of our lives and society that she distils into a painting.
1969 Cape Town, South Africa
