Mauricio Gonzalez creates paintings and sculptures as a response to the modern world around him. Gonzalez was born in Cuba and studied art in Miami, where the surrounding environment formed a lasting effect on his practice. Gonzalez's first sculptures used the housing crisis in Florida as a vehicle to comment on contemporary society and economics. Through basic construction methods, Gonzalez combined materials salvaged from foreclosed homes and construction sites for his fragile assemblages. Gonzalez continues to represent his world through the language of his sculptures and paintings, always with the desire to see his surroundings with new eyes and present these images in an new, objective way.
