Paper cutting artists are a rare find – even more so when looking to match the degree of talent and attention to detail that Mariapaola possesses. Mariapaola McGurk, affectionately known as MP, is one of only a handful of artists in South Africa who specialise in the fine craft of paper cutting artworks. Her artworks can take weeks to complete, with no way to speed up the delicate process. "The creative process of paper cutting is a beautiful, meditative experience… It takes incredible focus and presence as one wrong cut and the work may have to be started over again”.
Her works are a sight to behold. These one of a kind works of art present a fascinating juxtaposition of fragility and strength. The delicate nature of both the paper and process is skilfully navigated by Mariapaola to produce intense, striking artworks.
Mariapaola has taken part in a handful of group exhibitions over the years that she has been practicing art. In a first-time exhibition of her paper cutting artworks at the Turbine Art Fair in Johannesburg, 2021, her artworks sold out.
