Peter Soriano è un artista astratto franco-americano nato nelle Filippine che divide il suo tempo tra New York City e Penobscot, nel Maine. Sebbene abbia iniziato la sua carriera come scultore, il suo lavoro è ora bidimensionale.
È noto per i suoi audaci murales dipinti a spruzzo e per le sue opere più intime su carta.Il lavoro di Soriano è gestuale e geometrico, dominato da un lessico grafico di segni e notazioni.
Istruzione
Soriano ha conseguito un Bachelor of Arts presso l'Harvard College di Cambridge, Massachusetts, nel 1981 e, nello stesso anno, ha completato una residenza presso la Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture nel Maine.
Tecnica
Soriano ricevette la sua prima educazione artistica dallo zio Fernando Zobel, un importante artista astratto spagnolo. Zobel ha sottolineato l'importanza del disegno come base dello sviluppo artistico. Incoraggia Soriano a copiare opere nei musei e a trascorrere lunghe ore disegnando paesaggi e figure umane. In breve tempo, Soriano si affidò al disegno per tradurre le sue esperienze e i suoi movimenti in tutto il mondo.
A metà degli anni Novanta, Soriano si era guadagnato un riconoscimento internazionale per le sue sculture biomorfiche ingannevolmente giocose in fibra di vetro. Le sue sculture sono state regolarmente esposte da Lennon, Weinberg a New York e dalla Galerie Jean Fournier a Parigi. Poi, nel 2004, dopo una residenza presso l'Atelier Calder in Francia, Soriano si è concentrato sulle sculture murali composte da cavi d'acciaio, tubi e vernice spray. Alla fine, Soriano eliminò del tutto gli elementi strutturali per introdurre un altro corpo di lavoro: disegni murali o murales.
Questo nuovo lavoro appare a prima vista astratto: una costellazione di frecce, linee, scatole e notazioni dipinte a spruzzo, ma in realtà il lavoro fa riferimento ed è una risposta all'ambiente di Soriano.
In concomitanza con questi disegni murali, Soriano realizza opere su carta ispirate agli stessi argomenti. Questi disegni, su carta giapponese, sono realizzati con matita, inchiostri colorati, vernice spray e acquerello. Nel corso dei lavori, Soriano ripiega continuamente la carta, "un processo che affina e costruisce le sue composizioni fino a quando i disegni assumono una dimensione quasi scultorea", per citare un critico. Le opere finite sono dense di osservazioni, ricche di gesto, complesse di costruzione.
Ispirazione
Il lavoro di Soriano si ispira ai suoi paesaggi circostanti, tra cui, ad esempio: il Bagaduce, un fiume di marea che si affaccia sul suo studio nel Maine; una camera d'albergo a Busan, in Corea del Sud; la configurazione delle tubature dell'acqua nel suo loft di New York. Sorprendentemente, dato che è un artista astratto, trae ispirazione dai paesaggi svizzeri del XIX secolo, dalle pitture rupestri preistoriche e dagli studi giapponesi per le opere di Ukiyo-e su carta.

L'opera di Soriano è di proprietà di musei negli Stati Uniti e in Europa, tra cui la Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain, Parigi, Francia; la Morgan Library & Museum di New York; il Colby College Museum of Art di Waterville Maine; l'Harvard Art Museum di Cambridge, Massachusetts. Il suo lavoro è anche incluso nella collezione aziendale di Neuberger & Berman a New York.
