This edition of Art Basel 2019 will take place in Messeplatz 10 from June 13 to 16, 2019. Among the 290 international galleries there are 19 new entries, including: Barro Arte Contemporáneo from Argentina; Tommy Simoens and Vedovi Gallery from Belgium; Galeria Jaqueline Martins from Brazil; Temnikova & Kasela from Estonia; Galerie Crèvecoeur and Galerie Christophe Gaillard from France; Jahn und Jahn, Klemm’s and Daniel Marzona from Germany; SpazioA from Italy; Vadehra Art Gallery from India; Marfa' from Lebanon; Travesía Cuatro from Spain; Galerie Knoell from Switzerland, Project Native Informant from the United Kingdom; and Commonwealth and Council, Durham Press and David Lewis Gallery from the United States.
It seems that the fair really take care of these new entering, indeed, there are different reductions per square meter for all the new galleries, both for the first and second year. Additionally, if the main sector show will comprise 232 of the world's leading gallery, its also true that the galleries sector will be rejuvenated by seven galleries joining the sector for the first time. Dozens of galleries will present exceptional pieces from the classical Modern to postwar contemporary, creating a unique focus on the outstanding quality of work from 1900 to 1970, a fundamental aspect of the show.
But what about all the specific sectors?
Feature
Featuring 24 projects this year, the sector will present ambitiously curated exhibitions by both historical and contemporary artists, with 11 galleries completely new to the show. Just to mention few names, you will find works by: Allyson Strafella, Helen Mirra, Elke Silvia Krystufek, Wallace Berman, Cameron Rowland, Frank Bowling, Carl Cheng and Hudinilson Jr.
Statements
Welcoming six galleries to the Basel show for the first time, the sector will comprise 18 solo presentations by emerging artists, presented by young worldwide galleries. Highlights from the sector will include: Rose Salane, Ej Hill, Ad Minoliti, Ayesha Sultana, Sable Elyse Smith, Saba Innab, Farah Al Qasimi. The 21st Baloise Art Prize will be awarded to up to two artists exhibiting in Statements, with recipients being announced at the media reception of Art Basel.
Edition
It's clear to everybody that paper its strongly back in the art market. Indeed, the sector present 14 global leaders in the field of prints and edition works: Niels Borch Jensen Gallery and Editions, Alan Cristea Gallery, mfc - michèle didier, Atelier- Editions Fanal, Gemini G.E.L., Sabine Knust, Lelong Editions, Carolina Nitsch, Paragon, Polígrafa Obra Gràfica, Susan Sheehan Gallery, STPI, Two Palms and Durham Press, who participates in the Art Basel show for the first time.
Unlimited
Every time unlimited shocked us with it's super huge installations! Curated for the eighth and final year by Gianni Jetzer (Curator-at-Large at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C) this unique platform provides gallery with the opportunity to showcase towering installation, monumental sculptures, vast wall paintings, extensive photographic series, video projects, and performance art that transcend the traditional art fair stand. Among the names of this year: Larry Bell, Huma Bhabha, Andrea Bowers, Jonathas de Andrade, VALIE EXPORT, Alicia Framis, Abdulnasser Gharem, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Kapwani Kiwanga, Daniel Knorr, Jannis Kounellis, Lawrence Lek, Zoe Leonard, Sarah Lucas, Kerry James Marshall, Rivane Neuenschwander, Hélio Oiticica, Jacolby Satterwhite, Joan Semmel, Do Ho Suh, Fiona Tan, Franz West, and Pae White.
Parcours
Presented under the title 'The Impossibility of Being a Sculpture' on its 10th edition the Parcours sector will be presented in the greater Münsterplatz area, curated for the fourth year by Samuel Leuenberger, (founder of SALTS, the non-profit exhibition space in Birsfelden, Switzerland). The sector will feature work by Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Paweł Althamer, Mathis Altmann, Pierre Bismuth, Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys, Matias Faldbakken, Dan Graham, Laurent Grasso, Irena Haiduk, Camille Henrot, Caitlin Keogh, Germaine Kruip, Ad Minoliti, Antonio Obá, Reto Pulfer, Hassan Sharif, Ron Terada, Daniel Turner, Rinus Van de Velde, and Cathy Wilkes.
Film
Screened at Stadtkino Basel, the Film program will for the final year be curated by Maxa Zoller, director of the Dortmund I Cologne International Women's Film Festival. In addition, Marian Masone, New York-based film curator, will select a feature film for a special screening during the show week.
Conversations
The Conversations program offers audiences access to first-hand information on the international art world and will be programmed for the first year by the Berlin-based artist Julieta Aranda. The panels will take place in the auditorium.
Messeplatz
Finally, we can not miss the new edition of "Aggregate" in the temporary pavilion sited on Messeplatz, conceived and designed by Andrei Dinu. Curated by Cecilia Alemani the stage will present a performative environment by the Romanian artist Alexandra Pirici, that will brings together over 60 performers that form a vast collective body through the accumulation of individual gestures, enveloping the viewers in intricate choreographies and rehearsed compositions. Pirici conceived ‘Aggregate’ as a time capsule in which fragments from vernacular culture, art history and everyday life are given new living embodiments.
