Home Magazine The Fourth Edition of Photo Basel

In the beautiful frame of the Basel Art Fair, 35 galleries are ready to showcase the latest trends of robust sales of works within the world of contemporary photography.

As a reliable partner Kooness is pleased to announce the fourth edition of Photo Basel, Switzerland’s first and only art fair exclusively dedicated to the display and promotion of photography, curated by Daniel Blochwitz, from 12 - 17 June 2018. Located in the Volkshaus Basel, renovated by acclaimed Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and within walking distance to the modern and contemporary art fair Art Basel, brings together 35 exhibitors from both emerging and established galleries across 13 countries including France, Italy, Belgium, Colombia and Japan. Led by the director and founder Sven Eisenhut and his expert team, the fair in only four years has upheld its reputation as one of the most prominent photography fairs in the German speaking world.

But what will happen this year?

The fair will be attended by newcomers from all over the world: Ibasho Gallery (Belgium), Only Photography (Germany), Carlos Carvalho Arte Contemporânea (Portugal), °Clair (Germany) and Aperture (USA) just to name a few. As a result of the great success of the past editions, the fair has become a hub for artistic photography in which exhibitors, collectors, aficionados and visitors together create a unique photo basel DNA.

Indeed, for the 2018 Photo Basel art fair launches its two circles of experts: the advisory circle and the curatorial circle.

The advisory circle consists of galleries that through their suggestions, inputs and feedback will help improve services:

  • Galerie Baudoin Lebon, Paris
  • Galerie Esther Woerdehoff, Paris
  • Dorothée Nilsson Gallery, Berlin
  • widmertheodoridis, Switzerland
  • Kahmann Gallery, Amsterdam

The curatorial circle will be in charge of reviewing and selecting all the content of photo basel (including a selection of participating galleries and exhibitors), special projects and special exhibitions.

  • Dr. Felix Ackermann, Collector, Basel
  • Ben Füglister, Artistic Director, Cap Prize and Images Afrique Initiator & Assistant Editor at European Photography, Berlin

This year Photo basel 2018 will also present a new section entitled Master Cabinet, with a curated special exhibition “Pivotal Moments” devoted to selected masterpieces of the 20th century from participating galleries selected by the curator Daniel Blochwitz and photo basel's director Sven Eisenhut.

As the curator Daniel Blochwitz said:

My motivations to join photo basel as curator were the undeniable potential of such a fair, the further impact this could have on photography as a collectable art and the way it can help to highlight significant artists each year. I think that my understanding of the medium and my experience in the field can help to further establish Photo Basel amongst the important art fairs dedicated to photography. With a premier selection of new and returning exhibitors  as well as talks, prizes, collaborations with institutes and private foundations Photo Basel becomes an innovative and vital platform in which exhibitors benefit from Switzerland’s strong collector base as well as leading private collectors from Europe, America, Asia and Africa.
