It all starts from simple sheets of paper. Rough or smooth, of an extremely regular machine pressed consistency, or spotted and texturized showing the irregular unicity of the handmade…
The texture varies but they are all delicate - they can easily be torn, crumpled or blown away by a gust of wind. However, these fragile raw pieces of paper all hold the power to transform into a work of art. They are artistically versatile, holding infinite creative possibilities for those who use them.
‘paper positions munich 2021 – the show’ is reuniting a selection of paper works this Autumn. The show will be open from the 21st to the 24th of October at Karl & Faber. A smaller occasion than that of previous years, but no less special.
In the growing artistic centre of the city of Munich, after the success of the first two paper positions art fair and the first POSITIONS Munich art fair in 2019, we will see a preview of what awaits in the POSITIONS fair announced to unfold next year.
Hosting the group exhibition, the well-known auction house Karl & Faber, opened nearly 100 years ago and located in Amiraplatz, will provide a sophisticated, relevant and beautiful space in which to view and enjoy the artworks.
Every one of the 20 participating galleries are going to be displaying one ‘paper position’. A taster of very distinct works will show a curated variety of perspectives, artistic sensibility and techniques. In the curated exhibition, each piece will represent the gallery, the artist and the versatility of the delicate and fundamental paper artworks.
When looking at the modest masterpieces we must think of the pencils leaving a mark, scratching the paper. Abrased graphite, consumed when leaving a trace. Folded corners and crumpled pages showing scars. Watercolours permeating the surface, tinting the paper with faded pigments…
Each element can turn a simple piece of paper into a work of art.
The piece of paper, framed, stands before us in the show. These triumphant delicate masterpieces stand their ground in the important venue.
It is the result of experimentation and transformation. Every artist has moulded a blank sheet of paper, making very different artworks folding, marking, scratching and tinting.
The artists’ paper positions show the results of this translation of a message - a certain awareness which saw the power of possibilities of the most modest materials.
