“Paper positions hamburg – the show” is a curated exhibition focusing on drawing, collages and prints of 23 international artists from 19 Hamburg based galleries and four guests galleries. A brilliant operation to enhance international artists, who live and work on the territory, chosen by local galleries, with a small detour in neighboring cities, to build bridges of contemporary artistry on paper.

In the charming and newly renovated Brandshof, many temporary spaces - surreal, fantastic, graphic, disruptive -  and printed cosmos will confront, in an attempt to give new vitality to artistic practices based on paper. From installation - like the symbolic, yet provocative monuments of Olaf Metzel - to printing, paper positions hamburg’s leitmotiv is developing complex systems and reinterpreting the classic medium. A highly malleable medium, prolific, never flat, always directed towards the future of art.

This vigorous attitude is shown in the encaustic and collage on paper made by contemporary German painter Martin Assig, and maximized in Eduard Bargheer’s expressionist mosaic-like watercolors. Direct and exciting are the letterpress print of Franco-Moroccan multimedia visual artist Yto Barrada which mix seriousness with a healthy dose of humour.

Jorinde Voigt’s abstract drawings, presented by blue-chip König Galerie, incorporate text and collaged elements, while the psychedelic Metaphysischer Kran (Metaphysical Crane) of Oliver Ross oscillates between text and material quality: highly colorful patterns and clusters.
