paper positions berlin 2022 is all about how the medium of paper conveys more than what anyone could ever expect.

From the 28th of April until the 1st of May, during Berlin Gallery Weekend, this art fair occupied the Deutsche Telekom Hauptstadtrepraesentanz, located at the central Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin-Mitte.

A thoughtful display of 52 international exhibitors, this art fair was a melodic flow rather than a rhythmic succession of separate booths. This is a core principle for paper positions. It is a ‘salon-like situation’ as described by the founders.

The limited number of exhibitors enhances the special character of the fair. In fact, it evolves around dialogue, between artworks, artists, and galleries. As a visitor, you can focus on one particular piece, diving into the vocabulary of a specific artist, but you can even look at the overall picture in order to get a grasp on different currents, trends and the versatility of this medium.

The LEUE & NILL Award for the best gallery presentation was given to the berlin-based Feldbusch Wiesner Rudolph Galerie. This gallery presented a site-specific solo exhibit of artist Isabelle Borges.

Another one is the Paper Art Award, at its second edition. Sponsored by Canon, it is awarded to up to three artists who work with paper in “an outstanding, stimulating and special way”.

This year the first place of the Paper Art Award went to artist Afshan Daneshvar, presented by the Iranian O Gallery. Second place was awarded to artist Goekhan Erdogan, with Galerie Heike Strelow in Frankfurt, and third to Lisa Tiemann, whose work was displayed by Berlin-based Schwarz Contemporary, and Aja von Loeper, presented by the Berlin-based Wichtendahl Galerie.

Honouring “an outstanding contemporary position on the subject of drawing and the medium of paper” specifically for female artists, the 2022 edition was awarded to Maija Kurseva represented by the MĀKSLA XO Gallery in Riga. Also, this year there was an exclusive solo show for the 2021 paper positions award winner, Nora Schattauer.

Indeed, a 100-edition print was created together with the Ukrainian artist Artjom Chepovetskyy and Berlin-besed Handsiebdruckerei for a fundraising campaign ‘100 for a hundred’. All of the proceeds are going to be transferred to the aid organisation Be an Angel e.V. who evacuates people from Ukraine who are stuck in Moldova.

This art fair truly offers an incredible occasion for who recognises the limitless power of the simple medium.
