On April 2019 the project of the new LACMA’s building was approved. The redesign of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art by the award-winning Swiss architect Peter Zumthor will cost 650 million dollars. The project of the building was changed several times but the final design was finally approved from the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors.

According to a statement released by the CEO and director Michael Govan, the new building will replace “four ailing buildings that have significant structural issues and are no longer in shape to exhibit art.” The seven semi-transparent concrete and glass pavilions will be the main structure of the New LACMA building. This structure will support a transparent main exhibition level with a floor-to-ceiling glass façade.
The size of the future project will be more than 45,000 square feet smaller than the four existing LACMA buildings that will be destroyed and replaced by the new advanced structure. The project includes a new outdoor area, public programming, educational spaces, sculpture gardens, and integrated native and vegetation, as well as a brand-new parking lot. The construction of the museum’s new building is expected to begin in late 2019 and finish by the end of 2023. Just in time for the opening of two new structure in the same area: the new Metro station (purple line) and the Academy Museum Of Motion Pictures.
