Galería Hilario Galguera has recently launched an exhibition featuring the works of four local artists, in a project which brings artists and gallery together.

The four artists, all women working in Colonia San Rafael in Mexico City, have their work displayed in an exciting and stimulating ensemble. Hilario Galguera (Founder, Galería Hilario Galguera) explaines: “The project El Cuarto de Máquinas translated to The Machine Room, was to provide artists with a place to develop ideas and experiment in a less formal approach than a gallery.”

Having opened for the Gallery Weekend, which took place in the first week of November 2021, from 3-4th along with two other intriguing exhibitions, the opening was on the 5th. It is an informal conversation, bringing together four different but relatable perspectives to provide a fertile ground for artistic experimentation, dialogue and development.

Artist Lotte Anderson, born in 1989, explores social interactions through ephemera, sound, video and sculpture. Her work is an investigation. It unravels group dynamics across contexts, and the influences of trauma, nostalgia, euphoria and release. In Lotte Anderson’s works, which are both autobiographical and documentary, the viewer is active. In observing, you become an integrated part of the piece, influencing and being influenced.

Among them there is also artist Tori Pounds, born in 1995. Her artistic practice sheds light on Ecology and the damaging effects of anxiety. She focuses on what could follow human extinction – what we, as human beings, could leave behind. Using bright colours and smooth brushstrokes, Tori Pounds presents us with popular imagery as a provoking satire. It is the angle from which she invites us to discuss consumerism and Ecology.

Artist Elvira Smeke, born in 1978, turns towards everyday materials, adopting a critical feminist perspective lens to address environmental themes. She does this via sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, photography and video. Elvira Smeke analyses what is means to be a woman today, by evoking ideologies and stereotypical roles. It becomes a conversation about the joy of being a woman and, at the same time daily objects used and found materials - domestic and natural – help question and explore our anthropocentric society.

Born in 2000, artist Cosima von Moreau develops works around ideas of intimacy and the overlapping layers of life and experiences. Through a dark palette, she places herself in the window between figurative and abstract. Inspired by German Expressionism, Cosima von Moreau’s artistic practice is an exploration of the darkness of life in a stratified living.

The curated display is an exceptional possibility to valorise, view and get to know the four artists and the extremely relevant central themes. However, it is also an invitation to question our own perspective and generate a timely and open conversation in the Arts.
