Galería Hilario Galguera has launched an incredible exhibition produced in collaboration with Galería Millan. ‘Criaturas Ornamentales’ - the first solo show of Brazilian artist Rodrigo Andrade - presents paintings and monotypes created since 2015.

Born in São Paulo in 1962, this artist’s practice confronts the materiality of paint and the history of this medium. Delicate shapes, contrasting textures and conflicting tones mix with references to painting traditions - particularly German neo-expressionism.

From the beginning of November 2021 until the 20th of January 2022, the paintings and monotypes on display blend and shift between figurative and abstract composition showing how the artist has developed an ornamental alphabet, masterfully composing his works.

As Rodrigo Andrade describes, “The ornament becomes a written language, an ornamental alphabet. It all starts by drawing a line on the paper, similarly to the way these creatures came to be from gibbering arabesque lines. The distance between an idea and drawing a line is the smallest there is, like the one between an idea and a shape. A line creates a drawing in a few seconds, and in a few minutes several drawings can be made; until, in one afternoon, it is possible to develop a drawing system”.

On the walls of Galería Hilario Galguera, in Calle Francisco Pimentel 3 of Colonia San Rafael, Mexico City, the lines connect the works giving space to the artist’s artistic research around expressive paint and bold colours.

This time Galería Hilario Galguera proposes a curated selection of unmissable works, shedding light on new international artists, alongside local talents – opening up the local art scene to the production, promotion, registration and discussion of international contemporary art.

Having opened in November 2021 for the Gallery Weekend, along with two other intriguing exhibitions, this exhibition is not an isolated show. It represents an open dialogue with different artists in the vibrant context of this gallery.

It is a testimony to the diversity and richness which comes through experimentation along different lines of enquiry in the Arts, often hidden in separation.

‘Criaturas Ornamentales’ is the perfect collaboration between Galería Millan in Sao Paulo, Brasil and the space of Galería Hilario Galguera putting Brazilian artist Rodrigo Andrade’s mature language of surfaces and textures at the centre.
