It’s clear that the number of Fairs or Festivals dedicated to the photography world is growing day by day. But why? Maybe it’s because we are increasingly addicted to pictures, or perhaps it’s the result of this hybrid space between different media. How much is it difficult to walk across conventional boundaries of expressive fields?

All of these consideration are integral part of the Athens Photo Festival 2018 that from the 6 June to 29 July 2018 attempts to bring together a range of different perspectives from emerging and established artists and photographers from all over the world, with the aim to raise awareness and foster an understanding of contemporary culture and society through photography in all its forms. The 2018 main exhibitions take place at the Benaki Museum (Pireos St. Annexe) and present an accurate selection of over 100 entries and different initiatives curated by the director Manolis Moresopoulos.

Founded in 1987 on the initiative of Stavros Moresopoulos the festival is an annual event, right now the longest-running festival of photography in Greece and one of the five oldest in the world. But above all is a member of the European Month of Photography (EMoP), a network that includes photography festivals in Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Paris, and Vienna with the aim to confront expertise in curatorial practice in photography and the intention to develop common projects, notably exhibitions, including exchange of information about the local photographers and artists concerned with photography.

After 30 years of history the Athens Festival wants to reflect on its position in the European political change throught the dialogue with international artists and organisations.

The result is a range of events, including portfolio viewings, screenings, talks and discussions, workshops, and various community and participatory projects. In addition to the main venue-based programme, the festival encourages community involvement through satellite exhibitions in various locations in the city. Indeed, the Festival works within an international, national and local context, encompassing a variety of activities designed to reflect the diversity of contemporary photography, and to create opportunities for exchange of ideas, artistic expression and international engagement. For more information click here: Athens Photo Festival 2018.
