Tracey Adams è una pittrice astratta e incisore statunitense. Le sue opere riflettono un forte interesse per modelli musicali, ritmi, elementi compositivi lirici e quello che lei chiama un senso di performance. Vive e lavora a Carmel, California.
Adams si è laureata al Mount St. Mary' s College di Los Angeles nel 1978. Ha studiato incisione e pittura alla School of the Museum of Fine Arts di Boston dal 1979 al 1981, e ha conseguito il Master al New England Conservatory of Music nel 1980. Ha ricevuto diverse borse di studio, tra cui la Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant nel 2015, una sovvenzione dal Dipartimento di Stato degli Stati Uniti e dal Ministero della Cultura e una borsa di studio per il Vermont Studio Center.
Tecnica
Adams lavora su tavola e carta, utilizzando una miscela di vernice, encausto e grafite oltre a elementi di monotipo e collage. La pianificazione e l'intuizione influenzano allo stesso modo il suo processo. Spesso, inizierà un'opera o una serie dal punto di vista di una formula matematica esatta, pianificando in anticipo gli elementi compositivi. Altre volte inizierà con una struttura a griglia e poi lavorerà all'interno di quella struttura, incorporando gesti organici e performativi e pennellate espressive. Indipendentemente da dove inizia un particolare lavoro, Adams si impegna in un processo aperto ed esplorativo che consente al lavoro di evolversi. Spesso il risultato finale è un mix tra la sua idea originale e il suo istinto, creando una composizione che coglie l'essenza dell'armonia tra mente ed emozione.
Ispirazione
Il suo background musicale è ciò che più ispira Tracey Adams. Le sue opere attingono molto alla struttura musicale, al ritmo e alla composizione. Le sue scelte di colore parlano del suo ambiente personale che vive su una penisola vicino a Monterrey, nella California centrale. La luce dell'acqua, la capacità di silenziamento della nebbia, i colori del sole al tramonto e la tavolozza della lussureggiante flora locale trovano la loro strada nel suo lavoro. Mentre era una studentessa laureata, Adams fu in grado di lavorare spesso con il compositore e artista John Cage, che influenzò profondamente il suo progresso. Ha detto che il suo lavoro si sforza di catturare la calma e la bellezza di un ambiente che vorrebbe essere in se stessa.
"Vivo vicino all'oceano Pacifico e cammino lungo la spiaggia ogni giorno - tutte le belle forme simili a membra di alghe e alghe trovano la loro strada nel mio lavoro, così come i colori dell'acqua, del cielo e delle forme degli alberi. Lavoro su un continuum di gesto organico alla geometria. Rappresentano due aspetti distinti, ma molto reali, di ciò che sono. La mia mente è molto organizzata...mentre allo stesso tempo, amo disegnare in modo illimitato e intuitivo con un sacco di movimento fisico. La sfida consiste nel cercare di fondere entrambi in modo coerente.”
Adams ha esposto estesamente in mostre personali e collettive in tutti gli Stati Uniti e occasionalmente in Europa.
