Sunday, May 8 at 6 p.m. appointment with contemporary art at SACCA Gallery in Pozzallo (Ragusa) for the opening of MYSTIC, the solo exhibition of Riccardo Paternò Castello (Catania 1980, lives and works in Milan).

The exhibition, curated and with a text by Giovanni Scucces, focuses on the most recent works, created between 2020 and 2022, particularly those taken from the series "Pitture nere" and "Tabula rasa."

Two very different corpuses, both aesthetically and technically. In fact, the former is the result of operations performed with solvents on black fabric supports, bleached so as to shape by diffusing light and intervening, then, with color pigments. He acts on a monochrome surface, discoloring it with baths and brush strokes. And as if he were a chiseler, what is removed can no longer be added, corrected.

The works in the other series, on the other hand, are the result of a work based on a drawing that delicately and barely emerges from the white background of the canvas. With the use of graphite and/or charcoal he traces a labile drawing focusing on the main aspects of the original work. Then, as if to negate his work, he intervenes with rubber and white acrylic to blur, purify, dissolve, giving an aura of mysticism, a dreamy feeling that is well suited to the representations with a sacred character presented here.

The common thread among the various works is the author's connection with certain works and artists of the past; not a comparison on a technical basis, which would be unhelpful and sterile, but on the formal construction of the composition.

The reference works from which his works spring are drawn mainly from the Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. Scenes are distilled of all "trappings," of hidden meanings and brought to the essence of representation. The characters sometimes lose their physiognomic characteristics while maintaining their own recognizability given by the position or posture they assume.

His works also seem to have an innermost connection with frescoes. Indeed, the Black Paintings are reminiscent of wall paintings eroded by the passage of centuries, albeit devoid of the layering of stucco and color; while the Tabula rasa have the flavor of a dusting eroded by time on a white plaster. Again, the spolvero had a direct connection with the fresco, since it was used as a preparatory drawing for its creation.

Therefore, through an experimental, antithetical and contemporary modus operandi, we breathe centuries of history. It is up to us to recognize them and immerse ourselves in their meanderings, discovering new possible and more current readings.

The exhibition can be visited until June 30, Tuesday through Saturday, according to the usual opening hours or by appointment.
