Published on the occasion of the exhibition "Remains" at Pirelli HangarBicocca, the book offers for the first time a complete view of the more than thirty years of artistic production of Sheela Gowda (Bhadravati, Karnataka, India, 1957; lives and works in Bangalore).
His practice, which ranges from watercolor to printmaking and from sculpture installation, is characterized by a strong spatial component, taking as a starting point some elements of modernism, elaborated by the artist through production processes that refer to a ritual dimension. Gowda's work is distinguished by the use of a wide variety of materials reminiscent of Indian culture, such as hair, organics, cow dung, incense and natural pigments.
The book contains an in-depth essay by art historian Geeta Kapur, a contribution by author and curator Pablo Lafuente, and a text by exhibition curators Nuria Enguita and Lucia Aspesi. Th catalogue provides the reader with reflections and analyses by authors, curators, critics and historians who over the years have established a connection with the work of Sheela Gowda. In addition, a wide selection of works created between 1988 and 2019 is presented through a rich photographic documentation contributions specially commissioned for the book.
