  • About the book

The second volume of the Catalogue Raisonné of the works of Mimmo Rotella (Catanzaro, 1918 - Milan, 2006), edited by Germano Celant, is part of a larger project of systematic cataloguing of the artist's entire corpus. The publication is realized in collaboration with the Mimmo Rotella Institute, established in 2012 by Inna and Aghnessa Rotella and directed by Antonella Soldaini, together with the Mimmo Rotella Foundation, chaired by Aghnessa Rotella.

In this volume, the analysis and scientific verification are conducted on the works made in the period between 1962 and 1973, when the artist consolidated the language of décollage in its most graphic and pop aspect and moved on to research related to the techniques of photomechanical reproduction of the image. He uses photographic carry-over and artypo, up to the definition of a more automatic and immediate practice in the effaçages and frottages. Through a chronological path, the Catalogue highlights the various evolutionary stages that have characterized the artist's work, allowing a wide and documented reading of the works of this period. Starting with the image of advertising, whether of film productions or consumer products, Rotella continues with his experiments on décollages, now no longer informal, but influenced by the new icons of mass society.

At the same time, he increased his interest in printing processes: first came the photographic reproductions - obtained by projecting the and then the artypos, sheets used for the calibration of the machines and discarded by the printing presses, which Rotella appropriates to make works of art characterized by random iconographic superimpositions.

Germano Celant (Genoa 1940 - Milan 2020), internationally known for his theorization of Arte Povera, was the author of over one hundred publications, including books and catalogues, and curator of hundreds of exhibitions in major international institutions.
