  • About the book

The definitive cataloguing of Fontana's work on the basis of an accurate and up-to-date bibliographic and exhibition survey.

Author Enrico Crispolti. With the collaboration of Nini Ardemagni Laurini, Valeria Ernesti.

Chronologically ordered and subdivided according to the operative typologies within the very wide creative activity of Lucio Fontana (Rosario de Santa Fé, 1899 - Varese, 1968), the Catalogue Raisonné of sculptures, paintings, settings proposes, in a rigorous historical-critical profile, the entire corpus of works by the artist "of the two worlds", considered among the greatest protagonists of the artistic avant-garde of the 20th century for the high level of intensity of his research and the extraordinary quality of his results. Significant exponent, as a sculptor, of a new generation of European expressionists who opposed the "Novecento" in the Thirties, Fontana between the Forties and Fifties was a sculptor, but above all a painter and author of "environmental works", a protagonist of Spatialism in the "informal" sphere and then, in the Sixties, a point of reference for new pictorial and plastic research.

Fruit of the monumental work of archiving and documentation of authenticity carried out by the Lucio Fontana Foundation, the general Catalogue Raisonné retraces more than four decades of creative activity characterized by the intuition of the intrinsic dynamism of the image of contemporary life, between matter, light, space: from sculpture to the relationship of this with architectural spaces, from "spatial environments" to a painting whose dimension Fontana revolutionized through the affixing of material elements, but above all by going beyond the surface with "holes" and then "cuts" in the continuous search for "an art of the space age".

Realized in close collaboration with Lucio Fontana Foundation, this volume represents the most complete work of cataloguing of Fontana's work, on the basis of an accurate and updated bibliographical and exhibition survey. The authoritativeness and experience of the curator Enrico Crispolti, friend and scholar of the master's work since the end of the Fifties, and the rigour of the screening of the acquired documentation (concerning about 4000 works) make the Catalogue an essential and up-to-date instrument of knowledge of Fontana's work for scholars, collectors, museum operators, art dealers.
