  • About the book

Clio version
Current edition, accompanied by the Virgil Bookmark (2016), based on the author's original design, for displaying the anamorphic image on page 151 of the volume.

The artistic career of Luca Leonelli (Modena, 1951) unfolds in this catalogue raisonné of his graphic work, with over two hundred and fifty plates, like a large unitary fresco. Although the artist investigates many themes, the quality and charm of the images he creates, his absolute mastery of the engraving techniques used (etching, drypoint, mezzotint, aquatint) and his fantastic inspiration remain constant. Leonelli's works are steeped in allegory and metaphor, in revisiting the enigmas of myth, the history of art, literature and philosophical thought. This heritage seldom translates into peaceful visions, either when the bodies of people and things are openly marked by the visionary tension with which the artist has approached their representation, or when, as in the forms of plants or humble insects, the luminous, clear resemblance never ceases to disturb, or, finally, when Leonelli engages with the crude truth of physiognomic declinations.

Alongside his graphic work, Leonelli has always explored the territories of painting, watercolour and ink drawing, with results that show an equal mastery of expressive means - which rarely coexisted in the same period, but in different seasons of fervent work on canvas, paper and plates - and a continuous transmigration of motifs in one direction or another. In this regard, in the volume, alongside the catalogue raisonné of Leonelli's graphic works, some images of paintings and drawings are provided to help us better understand the artist's poetics and this aspect of his research.

Luca Leonelli reveals himself, through this catalogue of his graphic works, to be an artist of absolute value. His graphic work is characterised by restlessness, by a bitter evaluation of the 'magnificent fate and progress' of the human existential adventure and by an explicit.
