  • About the book

This first volume of the Catalogo Ragionato of the work of Giuseppe Capogrossi (Rome 1900-1972) edited by Guglielmo Capogrossi and Francesca Romana Morelli, collects for the first time in an exhaustive way the research of the painter until 1949, that is until the birth of the sign, with the works exhibited at the Galleria del Secolo in Rome in January 1950.

Starting from the first pictorial tests around 1920, the Catalogue documents, in depth, with numerous unpublished and hitherto lost works, the path of acquisition of a personal figurative identity that led Capogrossi to be one of the most important figures in the Roman School and more generally in Italy, up to the direct comparison with the Parisian culture of the thirties of the last century. No less important is the following period, which began at the end of the same decade, when the artist felt the inner need to experiment with new paths for his language: "At the beginning I used natural images, comparisons or affinities derived from the visible world - Capogrossi would later declare - then I tried to express directly the sense of space that was inside me and that I realized by performing everyday acts". After World War II, in fact, this need gradually reaches its peak with a group of works that rework the figurative modules in an increasingly abstract direction until the invention of his famous "sign".

In the catalog are presented about 600 works chronologically ordered and divided by technique (paintings, works on paper, graphics) each accompanied by a detailed technical-critical card. The study is completed by critical essays by the two authors and an introduction by Bruno Mantura to whom we owe the rediscovery, in the 1970s, of the figurative Capogrossi. In conclusion, an extensive biographical record and a bibliography with a claim to completeness, so that this work can be a useful working tool for scholars and enthusiasts.

Guglielmo Capogrossi, nephew of the artist, is President of the Capogrossi Archive Foundation. He is the author of numerous publications on the artist and has also curated the section of works on paper in the two major anthological exhibitions at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna: Giuseppe Capogrossi, 1974-75 and Capogrossi. Signs of the Century, 1999-2000.
