  • About the book

The ancient, glorious term of peintre-graveur (painter-engraver), made famous by Adam Bartsch, is entirely pertinent when one compares it with the activity of Enrico Della Torre (Pizzighettone, Cremona, 1931). Since his debut, in the early fifties, the artist alternates, with the same degree of intensity and importance, painting and engraving, soon developing his own vocabulary of signs, shapes and colors that are functional to capture and render echoes and suggestions of the secret lives that are hidden within nature, investigated, perceived, dreamed and loved in all its manifestations, and that arrive at results of high lyrical intensity, in which the natural datum is transfigured, and reality and imagination are inextricably merged.

In Della Torre's artistic career, the corpus of graphic works is therefore of fundamental importance for a better understanding of the secret genesis of the work of this master of lyrical abstractionism: etchings, lithographs and silographs were at times, even in the total autonomy of their language, a place of experimentation and revelation of intuitions which then transmigrated into his paintings.

The volume, edited by Sandro Parmiggiani, publishes all 440 engravings Della Torre has made from 1952 to the present day, accompanied by detailed descriptions including the print run, the size of the plates and the sheets used for each work. Alongside the curator's text, there is also a contribution by Ernesto Ferrero, as well as a rich critical anthology and the complete apparatus, including the artist's biography, bibliography and list of exhibitions.
