  • About the book

Arnaldo Pomodoro, an outstanding figure in international sculpture, is the protagonist of an expressive path that has now spanned more than fifty years.
With essays by Giovanni Carandente, Gillo Dorfles, Sam Hunter, Arturo Carlo Quintavalle.

After his debut in the climate of overcoming informalism, Pomodoro developed an idea of sculpture in which the three-dimensional geometric paradigm formed the basis of numerous operational strands. On the one hand, the dissolution of geometric perfection by virtue of a sort of erosion due to complex sign patterns of great symbolic depth, which also leads the artist to question, in a specific way, the value of sculpture as an architectural topos, from the column to the stele. On the other hand, the capacity of these same sign scores to recover, from the spring identity of the sculpture, the value of frontality, of articulated surface, of the place of a handwriting that unfolds through iterations and continuous variations.

The General Catalogue of Arnaldo Pomodoro, the result of many years of systematic cataloguing of his entire sculptural oeuvre, documents all the works created by the artist from 1953 to 2003, alongside the first comprehensive documentary research on the entire existing bibliography.

The work, coordinated by Flaminio Gualdoni, director of the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation, is the result of studies carried out by the Arnaldo Pomodoro Archive and represents the first stage in the overall cataloguing of the artist's work, which will continue with the cataloguing of his entire stage activity, applied art and graphic work.
