About the Artists

1986 Nara, Japan

Yuji sugimoto born in Nara, Japan in 1986.
After graduating from the University of Arts in Osaka, he worked for 10 years in Kyoto as a craftsman in the restoration of cultural properties.
In 2018 he moved to Italy to study art.

After graduating from an art university in Japan, he worked in Kyoto restoring cultural properties.
This period of work gave him a sense of discomfort and a keen interest in the relationship between history and human society.
After working in the field of restoration of cultural properties for 10 years, he entered the Carrara College of Art in 2018 to study art in Italy again. Because he sees Italy as a country where traditional culture and contemporary art coexist. However, Carrara, where he lives, places a strong emphasis on traditional marble sculpture, and he recalls the discomfort he felt in Kyoto due to his deviation from reality.
From this situation, he reconsidered the original role of art and his expression. And he considered the answer as a religious art that visualizes the invisible deity and gives a common understanding to many people.
However, due to the changing times, man has reorganized the scriptures and the image of God many times. If the Creator freely created mankind, mankind has repeatedly constructed and dismantled religion, with God acting like a child playing with block toys. And he chooses "the Creator's toy" as the concept of his work.
It turns a God, which has become blurred due to globalism and historical changes, into a toy, and expresses the pursuit of a universal concept buried in human history with the traditional Japanese technique. When someone sees his work, he wants to create an opportunity to think about his true identity in the long flood of history.
