Drawings & Works on Paper

Handcut Archival Paper

, India

Through my works, I often reimagine everyday things, bringing a touch of whimsy into mundane urban life. I explore themes around city life, travel, exploration and a search for things unknown. Inspired by a childhood love for doodling, I often approach my work with a bit of light-heartedness and humor, adding unexpected elements to depictions of ordinary objects. My works are a celebration of the ordinary and the process itself is a meditative journey. The usually monochromatic works play with shadows and light, creating an additional dimension and inviting the viewer in.

Vanshika Rathi’s art practice revolves around the ideas of everyday urban life, architecture, travel and a quest for exploring and understanding the unknown. Her pieces are created by an organic process of sketching on large continuous sheets of paper, which are then carved with a knife. Inspired by everyday objects, travel and architecture, she loves adding whimsical, fairytale-like, and unexpected floral elements to her work.

Vanshika is a self-taught artist, having previously worked in investment banking and holds a Masters degree in Economics & Management from the London School of Economics. Her work has been exhibited at the Serendipity Arts Festival (2017) and the Tree of Life exhibition by the World Crafts Council in Taipei (2018) and she has participated in group shows with Art Incept.
