Salvador Dali (1904 – 1989, Spanish) “Moshe Dayan” (1968) from the Famous Men Suite.  Rare, hand-signed limited edition etching in sepia ink on Japon paper, signed in pencil by the artist in the lower right margin and Roman numeral numbered XIV/XXV in the lower left margin.  The image measures 6.75 x 4.75 inches and the work of art has been matted and placed under glass in a 17.75 x 14.75-inch frame.  The piece has not been examined outside the frame and appears in good condition with some very minor discoloration. Dali chose five men for the “Famous Men” suite: Moshe Dayan, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, David Ben-Gurion and President John F. Kennedy.  This finely rendered etching features Dali’s draftsmanship, detailing and use of line and imagery.  Dayan is in the foreground, and above him a cloud-like image of a Star of David, reminiscent of the Israeli flag, hovers in the sky.  Dali’s iconic landscape stretches behind the man and the background includes trees, mountains, birds, while an angel with wings and outstretched hands stands in the desert behind Dayan’s left shoulder.  Catalogue References: Field 68-8;  [Albert Field's “Official Catalog of The Graphic Works of Salvador Dalí” (1996) Reference 68-8, C, page 76]; Michler & Löpsinger # 224;  Shali # 64

1904 Figueras, Spain

Salvador Dalí was born in 1904, in Figueras, Catalonia. He was one of the most well-known surrealist artists of the twentieth century, and he was a great experimenter of the pictorial, theatrical and cinematographic fields. His style is original and it is distinguishable due to the provocative subject matter. He was able to integrate the Freudian theory of dream analysis in his works, expressing the workings of the unconscious mind and associate words, images and thoughts to provoke a specific kind of emotion in the viewers, revealing also the artist’s darkest secrets and an alternative reality. Thanks to his expertise as a draftsman and a colorist, he used a variety of techniques and mediums to create his artwork, such as lithography, sculpting, oil painting, fashion designing and writing.                                                    Dalí’s work was inspired by Pablo Picasso, whom he met in Paris, and by an Italian painter, called Giorgio de Chirico. Since he used the themes of death, eroticism, childhood memories, dreams, his artworks can be viewed as modern, innovative, deep, symbolic and sometimes grotesque.
