About the Artist

1939 , France

Buraglio was born in 1939 in Charenton, near Paris. His work finds itself in the zone between abstraction and representation in which he's created a remarkable body of prints and drawings. During the 1960s, Buraglio developed a number of unique artistic methods which he designated recouvrements (overlappings), agrafages (grafting), and camouflages. In response to the student occupations and workers' strikes in Paris during May of 1968, Buraglio left painting to take up an expressly political cause. Returning to art in 1974, he began producing "paintings" where paint was applied directly to stretcher bars, picture frames or window frames. In his 1978 series "Drawings after…" he returned to representation, basing his work on those of canonical figures such as Poussin, Ingres, Cézanne and Giotto. A solo exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in 1983 proved a breakthrough for the artist and brought him significant notoriety. In its moving through the realms of both representation and abstraction, drawing and assemblage, while all the while maintaining a dialogue with the works of Old Masters, Pierre Buraglio's work prizes a most modern approach to art--a fact which solidifies his position as one of the most influential contemporary artists in France.
