About the Artists

1956 Rovigo, Italy

Pier Luigi Berto was born in Rovigo in 1956 and as a teenager he arrived at the school of the Russian sculptress Lidia Trenin Franchetti, a pupil of Charles Despiau in Paris, at his studio in Villa Strohl-Fern in Rome. He also begins to frequent, always at Villa Strohl-Fern, the studio of Carlo Levi, where he knows and becomes passionate about his pictorial world and his themes. Several friends of his older brother Gian Paolo Berto (painter and engraver) are often guests at home and, since childhood, he has the opportunity to meet characters such as Marino Mazzacurati, Tono Zancanaro, Corrado Cagli, Renzo Vespignani, Ugo Attardi. Berenice, a journalist from Paese Sera and an art critic, follows him in his beginnings and often recommends him to the greatest Italian painters and writers, his dear friends. It is she who will stimulate his cultural emancipation by making him discover contemporary literature and poetry that will be the main source of inspiration for his work. For a short but intense period at the end of the sixties he painted alongside Riccardo Tommasi Ferroni, at the studio in Via dei Riari in Rome, where he developed ancient techniques such as the silver tip and the preparation of paper, which will be important to confirm his orientation towards a more graphic production. At the same time he becomes passionate about the work of Carlo Cattaneo, from whom he will learn a taste for drawing, preferring canvased paper as the ideal support for his work.
