Buste de Femme Nue Face, 1979-1982

Lithography, hand-printed by a traditional multi-plate method using one single plate for each colour on paper

17 1/2 × 24 in, 44.5 × 61 cm; Edition of 1000.

Pablo Picasso’s nude portrait of his wife and muse Jacqueline Roque is one hundreds of portraits that he painted of her in the 11 years of their marriage. He had met her when she was just 26, himself 72, convincing her to date him by drawing a chalk dove on her house and bringing her a rose everyday for six months. Picasso painted her angular and elongated, with her face characterised by large eyes and high-set cheekbones. The shades of deep blue lay fluidly on the canvas with bright whites and a vibrant yellow suggest a recognition of the artist's early 'blue period', yet it had now come to combine with the energy he had for life and all its wonder.

After Pablo's death in 1973, Jacqueline prevented Picasso's children Claude and Paloma Picasso from attending his funeral. Jacqueline also barred Picasso's grandson Pablito Picasso – Marina Picasso’s younger brother - from attending the service. Pablito was so distraught he drank a bottle of bleach, from which he died three months later. The death of her brother is an key reason Marina chose to sell all of the work she had inherited, for it could not be helped but associated with his passing. Picasso is quoted to have said: “Are we to paint what’s on the face, what’s inside the face, or what’s behind it?” However, one questions the delicate portrayal in his paintings as compared to the pain Jacqueline caused throughout his family after his death.

This original lithograph forms part of the Marina Picasso Estate Lithograph Collection, which has been hand-printed by a traditional multi-plate method using one single plate for each colour. This work of art was produced under the strict supervision of the famous Chromist, Laurent Marcel Salinas (1913-2010) who was a Master Printer in his own right and worked very closely with Pablo Picasso throughout his life and produced some of the artist`s finest original prints. This Special Edition was limited to 1,000 copies which was published and released between 1979 and 1982. - several years after the artist’s death - as a posthumous edition.

Marina Picasso, the official heir to her grandfather’s French estate, sold the collection’s publication rights to investors in order to pay duties due to the French government after Picasso’s death. Once the duties were paid the original paintings were released by the French Ministère de l’Economie and returned to the estate. The investors name appears on the bottom right hand corner of the image. There is also a true Picasso signature below the image that has been authorised for use by the heirs of the estate and in conjunction with New York Attorney at law Martin Bressler of Vaga.
These prints document important women in Picasso’s life, including fellow artist Dora Maar, and his beloved daughter, Maya. Picasso believed that “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” and demonstrates this clearly by detailing colours, lines and forms to reflect the sitter as a whole; they are portraits of Picasso’s perception, not just what the women looked like. To see the world this way and to pour your internal understanding out onto canvas through paint is a feat of admiration for both the medium and the matter.

About the Artists

1973 , Spain

Pablo Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. Regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a dramatic portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by the German and Italian airforces. Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a naturalistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. After 1906, the Fauvist work of the slightly older artist Henri Matisse motivated Picasso to explore more radical styles, beginning a fruitful rivalry between the two artists, who subsequently were often paired by critics as the leaders of modern art. Picasso's work is often categorized into periods. While the names of many of his later periods are debated, the most commonly accepted periods in his work are the Blue Period (1901–1904), the Rose Period (1904–1906), the African-influenced Period (1907–1909), Analytic Cubism (1909–1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919), also referred to as the Crystal period. Much of Picasso's work of the late 1910s and early 1920s is in a neoclassical style, and his work in the mid-1920s often has characteristics of Surrealism. His later work often combines elements of his earlier styles. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art.
