About the Artist

1981 , Japan

Noritaka Minami was born in Osaka, Japan in 1981 and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1987. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004 with a BA in Art Practice and a Minor in Asian American Studies. He graduated from the the University of California, Irvine in 2011 with a MFA in Studio Art and an Emphasis in Visual Studies. Minami is currently Assistant Professor of Photography at Loyola University Chicago. He has also taught photography at Harvard University, Wellesley College, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, University of California, Berkeley, and University of California, Irvine. He is a recipient of grants from organizations such as the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (New York), the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts (Chicago), and Center for Cultural Innovation (Los Angeles). In 2015, he published a monograph titled 1972 – Nakagin Capsule Tower (Kehrer Verlag), which received the 2015 Architectural Book Award from the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt, Germany. Exhibitions of his works have been held at UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design, Center for Photography at Woodstock, and Griffin Museum of Photography. His forthcoming solo exhibitions include the Reischauer Institute at Harvard University and Kana Kawanishi Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. In his art practice, Minami is interested in using the medium of photography to investigate the histories of built environments that are proposals of the future envisioned in the past and how their current states allow for the reflection of the contemporary moment in society.
