The Terra Firma series of works is a welcome departure from last year's acrylic-on-canvas abstract works. Choong ventures into an unconventional and unknown territory right now. Terra Firma alludes to mother earth. For him, it's a way to be grounded in a particular practice and experimentation, as he believes that the only thing constant, is change. Textures fascinate Choong. Marks on the asphalt, paint peeling off the walls, lichen, stalagmites, water erosion, and decay are all part of the natural world. The series celebrates nature by fusing materials in his studios like aluminum, steel, oil paint, turpentine, solvents, and pigments: guided partly by Choong and You as the observer. Without you, there is no him. It's the same for light and dark, front and back, forwards and backward. While spontaneity and a playful spirit are required in the making of art, a mechanical element is present too. For some it may be the washing of brushes, stretching canvasses, mixing colors, researching, etc. With these words, He brings the mechanical element into the painting and creating process. It's a play. It's an act. It's a dance. Any art form is fundamentally about that.
